Krel
“The Breakers”
486 Breakers. Every wall that ever fell to the Skarn fell to them first. They use resonant vibration to unmake any defense.
Lore
486 Breakers. Every wall that ever fell to the Skarn fell to them first.
I watched a Krel unit take a fortress once. Twelve of them. Standing at the base of walls that had held for three thousand years. Stone so dense it had turned back plasma fire and orbital strikes. The defenders thought themselves safe.
They did not attack. They stood. Motionless. For hours.
Then they began to hum.
Not sound. Vibration. I felt it in my core-crystal before I heard it. A frequency that made my joints loosen. My formations ache. The wall itself began to weep dust. Three thousand years of certainty, unmade by a sound I could barely perceive.
The defenders fired everything they had. The Krel did not move. Their ruby formations absorbed the impacts like stone drinking rain. I saw one crack along the shoulder. It did not stop humming. Its eyes never closed. The ruby light behind them pulsed in time with the wall's disintegration.
By sunset, the wall was gone. Not destroyed. Gone. Reduced to powder so fine it hung in the air like mist. The Krel walked through it. They did not celebrate. They did not speak. They simply moved to the next wall.
That night I found the one with the cracked shoulder. It sat apart from the others, its ruby formations dim.
"Why do you do this?" I asked. "The Zrak hunt. The War Track has other roles. Why choose to be a Breaker?"
It touched the crack in its shoulder. The fissure was still humming. Even at rest. A faint vibration I could feel through the ground between us.
"Everything ends," it said. "Every wall. Every fortress. Every certainty. Time breaks them all eventually. We simply remind them." It paused. "The Zrak hunt what runs. But some prey hides behind walls. Behind safety. Behind three thousand years of believing they cannot be reached."
It looked at me then. Its eyes were not angry. Not proud. They were patient in a way that made me uncomfortable.
"We are the frequency that finds the flaw. Every structure has one. Every defense has a resonance that unmakes it. We listen until we hear it. And then we hum."
I looked at the crack in its shoulder. At the fine powder still coating its arms.
"Does it hurt?" I asked. "The vibration. Constantly."
It did not answer. But I noticed the other cracks then. Dozens of them. Hairline fractures running through its ruby like veins. Each one humming its own faint note.
The cost of breaking others is being broken yourself. One wall at a time.
486 Breakers. They are the first sound a world hears before silence.
